Abstract: 

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) is an integrated drinking water, stormwater and wastewater utility that serves approximately 1.7 million customers in Philadelphia County and surrounding suburban communities.  The three PWD drinking water treatment plants withdraw an average of 250 MGD from the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers.  PWD operates the most downstream drinking water intakes on both rivers, and less than two percent of the combined 10,000 mi² contributing watershed area is within Philadelphia County.  Given jurisdictional limitations and intakes located on developed rivers, the nationally recognized PWD Source Water Protection Program takes an innovative approach to maintaining a resilient drinking water supply.  While wastewater effluent and stormwater runoff are present in drinking water supplies nationwide, knowledge and experience from the management and operation of PWD wastewater and stormwater utilities inform, and arguably enhance, PWD Source Water Protection Program strategies.  The PWD Source Water Protection Program employs science and research, policy and implementation, technology, and most importantly, partnerships, as mechanisms to accomplish goals.  This presentation will provide an overview of PWD's Source Water Protection Program.
