On the Waterfront

Domenic Rocco, PE, MCE

Regional Manager, Waterways and Wetlands Program

      Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
      Southeast Regional Office

Abstract:

Southeastern Pennsylvania possesses a unique resource with its Delaware and Schuylkill River waterfront and their many distinctive characteristics.    In my lifetime, I’ve seen a dramatic transformation of our waterfront.  I was born and raised in South Philadelphia only a few blocks away from Delaware Avenue (now called Columbus Blvd.).    I have spent the majority of my time at DEP since 1993 managing waterway programs and projects throughout the region, but have long kept closely involved with our waterfront and coastal zone.

The Lecture will look at:

  • ·        The transformation that the waterfront has taken from early settlers, through the present time, and projecting into the future.
  • ·        The many land uses along our waterfront and how the Department has worked diligently to establish and maintain public access.
  • ·        The unique habitat areas and wetland resources that exist and mitigation projects that have been established through permitting in Bucks, Philadelphia and Delaware Counties.
