Green Roof Technology and Low Impact Best  Management Practices for Stormwater

Charlie Miller, P.E., President

(formerly Roofscapes, Inc.)

Charlie Miller, P.E., President of Roofmeadow, Inc. (formerly of Roofscapes, Inc. ) will provide an overview of the practical applications of green roof technology and low impact best management practices for stormwater management which he has been collecting over many years of implementation and performance analysis.  Come to learn how this technology has evolved over time and its most recent applications throughout the world.

Recent research and monitoring data is changing our understanding of green roof hydrology.  In particular, it is increasingly clear that green roofs should be interpreted as thin groundwater systems, as opposed to elevated ground landscapes.  This realization has implications for how we design green roofs and  how they should be incorporated into stormwater runoff management programs.  It is also apparent that the scale of a green roof really does matter.  Greater benefit will be achieved when roofs with large areas are greened.   An appreciation for the variables that control green roof performance will enable the development of thinner and lighter assemblies.  This will be critical if the hope is to purposefully retrofit large numbers of existing buildings and modify the hydrology of our urban centers.  This presentation briefly covers the promise of green roofs and points out the  limitations of our current knowledge.

A Note To All Licensed Professional Engineer's:  This seminar does qualify for 1.0 Professional Development Hour (PDH).  A Certificate of Attendance will be available on site for AWRA-PMAS members only.  The meeting price for non-members who wish to receive a 2011 Certificate of Attendance for the PDH is $10.00 ($3.00 for meeting + $7.00 for certificate).
