Phosphorus Treatment – Advanced Removal Mechanisms and Amended Design for Stormwater BMPs

Scott Perry

Imbrium Systems

Land development and anthropogenic activities has deteriorating surface water quality, resulting from pollutants transported in stormwater runoff. Specifically fresh water lakes and rivers have experienced an increase in the onset of toxic algae blooms and reduced dissolved oxygen due to continued, uncontrolled phosphorus loading from an ever increasing source, urban stormwater runoff.  Advances in passive phosphorus treatment filtration media have recently become available. These innovative tools can be incorporated into pre-existing BMP design and LID applications to target dissolved phosphorus capture, and elevated TP capture from urban runoff for extended periods of time. The presentation will serve to demonstrate where phosphorus loads come from, the issues with excessive phosphorus loading from stormwater, typical stormwater BMP removal rates, and how to best address phosphorus loads by incorporating proven technologies with existing stormwater infrastructure including conventional BMPs, LID applications and Green Infrastructure, through the use of Sorbtive Media, a phosphorus-absorbing engineered material.

Scott Perry is a Certified Professional in Storm Water Quality (CPSWQ) working on various industrial and stormwater treatment solutions for over 15-years.

Mr. Perry is an active member with the ASCE/EWRI Low Impact Development and ASCE/EWRI Guidelines for Certification of Manufactured Stormwater BMPs Task Committees, and the Virginia Stormwater BMP Clearinghouse Committee.  He additionally has participated with ASTM C27.70 Precast Concrete Products for Stormwater Management Subcommittee to develop test standards.

Mr. Perry is a graduate of the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, in Syracuse, New York, and is the Managing Director of Imbrium Systems based in Rockville, Maryland.

To All Licensed Professional Engineer's:  This seminar does qualify for 1.0 Professional Development Hour (PDH).  A Certificate of Attendance will be available on site for AWRA-PMAS members only.  The meeting price for non-members who wish to receive a 2011 Certificate of Attendance for the PDH is $10.00 ($3.00 for meeting + $7.00 for certificate).
