Cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Syracuse are well on their way to implementing their green infrastructure programs. Practitioners and researchers are both now focusing on fine tuning individual design strategies, and quantifying the potential benefits at multiple scales. This talk will address some of the current physical, economic, and institutional challenges and opportunities faced by cities in this process of “scaling up”. Case studies from New York and Philadelphia will address potential life cycle benefits of GI at the watershed scale, and the opportunities afforded by new forms of partnerships in urban watershed management.

Dr. Montalto, PE is a licensed civil/environmental engineer and hydrologist with 20 years of experience working in urban and urbanizing ecosystems as a practitioner, designer, and researcher. This experience includes planning, design, implementation, and analysis of natural area restoration and green infrastructure projects, featuring natural treatment systems for wastewater and stormwater management, as well as water harvesting and reuse systems.

In addition to serving as the President and Principal Engineer of eDesign Dynamics LLC, Dr. Montalto directs the Sustainable Water Resource Engineering Laboratory at Drexel University, where he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering 2007. He is a member of the Advisory Boards of the New York City Natural Areas Conservancy, and Natural Infrastructure Innovative Financing Lab (NatLab) in Philadelphia among other organizations, and serves as Co-Chair of the American Society of Civil Engineer’s Technical Committee on Low Impact Development Computational Methods.
