Constructed Wetlands for On-site Wastewater Treatment

Delaware Valley College

The Department of Environmental Protection funded a study at Delaware Valley College to evaluate new small flow technologies for on-site wastewater treatment. This presentation will briefly review those technologies focusing especially on the constructed wetland systems. System design, operation, and treatment effectiveness will be discussed.

Mr. Hepner is a full professor in the Agronomy & Environmental Science Department at Delaware Valley College where he has taught and done research for the past 34 years. He holds a BS Degree in Agronomy from Delaware Valley College, and an MS degree in Agronomy from Penn State University. In addition he is a Certified Prof. Soil Scientist under ARCPACS. He teaches courses in Soils, Watershed Management, Soils and Environmental Planning, Soil Conservation, Soil Fertility, Field Crop production, and Sustainability. He has extensive experience in production agriculture, having served as General Manager of Farm Operations for the College’s crop and livestock operations on approximately 600 acres. His research has involved the resources utilized by both the agricultural sectors and urban sectors and how there can be a synergistic affect in resource use at the ag-urban interface. He has had projects funded by EPA, PADEP, PA Dept. of Agriculture, and NOAA. All Mr. Hepner’s research projects involve working with and allowing undergraduate students to participate in the research. He has served on a number Boards including the Penna. Assoc. of Professional Soil Scientists, Nutrient Management Advisory Board for the State Conservation Commission, and the Board of Directors for the Penna. Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association.
